Een stukje historie: YAMAHA in 1991 - Europa's eerste Sport-Tour, de FJ, met zijn vloeistofgekoelde 4-takt DOHC parallele 4-cilinder motorblok, droeg dit blok in een taai lateraal frame. Ook werd Yamaha's unieke vibratiereductie gebruikt genaamd Orthogonal Mounting. In deze vorm maakte de motor haar debuut als 1100 cc machine in 1984. Nadat in Europa een grote schare liefhebbers was opgebouwd werd deze opgeschaald naar 1200 cc in 1986. Later, in 1991, werd het type opnieuw uitgebracht onder de naam FJ 1200 A, met eem state-of-the-art ABS (Anti Blokkering Systeem).
